Of hexafoil form, the face with a central cabochon ruby surrounded by six similar rubies and six flat-cut diamonds together forming a rosette, the reverse enamelled with a single floral spray on a red enamel ground within narrow light blue border, suspension loop above and pendant pearl below

Lot Essay

The inlay of this pendant is very similar to that of one in the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait dated to the 4th-5th decade of the 17th century (Manuel Keene and Salam Kaoukji, Treasury of the World, London, 2001, no.6.24, p.71). The enamel on the reverse is of a type found on a number of 17th century jewels including a pendant in the al-Sabah Collection (Keene and Kaoukji, op. cit, no.6.34, p.76) and covering a small 17th century gold mango-shaped bottle sold in these Rooms 27 September 2001, lot 117.
