Born at sea, Samuel Walters is the best known and most accomplished of the Liverpool School of ship portraitists of the nineteenth century. Brought up in the docks of London, he moved to Liverpool with his family and worked in his father's studio, before embarking on his own extremely successful career. Although chiefly known for his ship's portraits, he also exhibited regularly at the R.A. from 1842-61.
