LEOVILLE LAS CASES
Jean-Hubert Delon, the fourth generation proprietor of Léoville-Las Cases, continues the trend of producing great wines the equivalent of a first growth wine begun by his father in the mid 1970s on this large meticulously kept estate. The emphasis on quality has been long standing, though, with a second wine for declassified juice being introduced as early as the 1902 vintage with even a third wine now in the fold. Close proximity and similar soil to Chateau Latour becomes a more muscular style than typical in St. Julien intensified by the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Léoville-Las Cases is full-bodied, concentrated and tannic wine. A quintessential claret.
Château Léoville-Las-Cases--Vintage 1982
Saint-Julien, 2me cru classé
In original wooden case
"Tasted three times over a two month period, this youthful yet profoundly complex wine gets my nod as the finest Leoville-Las-Cases ever made. It reveals massive proportions yet extraordinary purity, elegance, and balance. This dense ruby/purple-colored 1982 still looks and tastes as if it were 5-8 years old. The nose offers up blazingly well-delineated, pure aromas of creme de cassis, cherry jam, minerals, and toasty new oak. This unctuously-textured, gorgeously rich, pure, super-concentrated, low acid effort concludes with a 45+ second finish. There is still tannin to shed in this unbelievably fresh, lively, full-bodied, vibrant wine. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035". Wine Advocate, Jun 2000
