Lot Essay

The mobile was sent in by the artist in 1953 for the charity lottery "Kunstenaars helpen", organised by "Het Rampenfonds" and the late Willem Sandbergen, then director of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, to help the victims of the flood in Zealand, during which more than 1100 peopler were drowned. Calder responded very generously to Sandbergen's appeal and donated three works for this sale. A sketch for the mobile and letters to Sandbergen by the artist in which he confirms his gifts are in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum.
