Of shaped oval form after a European silver original, enamelled at the centre with a European figure seated on blue pierced rockwork playing a mandolin enclosed by a pink leaf scroll band, the border with butterflies and parrots divided by colourful scrolling acanthus leaves below the moulded foliate rim

Lot Essay

This dish is from a series of plates and dishes, each depicting a central European figure seated on blue rockwork or a grassy bank amongst scattered flower sprays, often playing various musical instruments, and enclosed within bands of flowers and rococo leaves. Several are illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, figs. 4.29, 6.62, 8.3, and 8.10. A related dish of similar form to the present example is in the Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels, exhibited Chinese Export Porcelain, Hong Kong, 1989/90, pp.126-7, no.39; and a plate from the Mottahedeh Collection is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol.II, p. 359, no. 348.
