Lot Essay

This drawing is a study for the painting Ballsaal (lit. Hans Hess, Georg Grosz, New York 1974, p. 168) which is lost in World War II and was in the collection of the Staatliche Museen in Berlin. The man with glasses has been depicted in the painting in the reverse, but the couple to the couple to the right has been painted as in the present lot. The other figures don't appear on the final work.
