Lot Essay
This group of four drawings depict buildings part of the Windsor Great Park estate. The first, Adelaide Lodge (or Adelaide Cottage as it is now known) stands in a picturesque dell about half a mile to the south east of the Castle and was built circa 1831.
Frogmore House has been the country residence of various monarchs since the seventeenth century, and was one of Queen Victoria's favourite retreats. In the 33 acre gardens are the Royal Mausoleum (burial place of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) and the Duchess of Kent's Mausoleum, together with a 'Gothic Ruin', and 'Queen Victoria's Tea House'. The name derives from the preponderance of frogs which have always lived in this low-lying and marshy area.
