Lot Essay

Henry Dasson (d. 1896) is recorded as having worked in Paris at 106, rue Vieille-du-Temple and specialised in supplying primarily revival works of the ancien regime. In 1871 Dasson bought the workshop and stock from the widow of the ébéniste Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen and quickly distinguished himself as a proprietor of haut lux decorations with mounts of the highest quality. A frequent participant in the major exhibitions, Dasson was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1883 and was awarded the Grand Prix Artistique at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle.

Located in the region of l'Oise, France, Chateau de Vez dates from the 13th century, though little is know of Léon Dru for whom the piece was possibly commissioned. However, this vitrine is based on a model for a panelled armoire and was conceived by Dasson as a vitrine to accommodate the growing trend of displaying one's various objets de vertue.
