Each finely painted, one with the Athenian statesman 'Perikles' seated beside a lake resting his right hand on a manuscript, a muse at his side leaning on a lyre; the other with the Shakespearian or Plutarchian tragic figure, 'Coriolanus' an exiled Roman general depicted encamped, his mother Voluminia, wife and child, attempting to dissuade him from attacking Rome, both neoclassic panelled borders elaborately enriched and detailed in black with animal vignettes
