Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725 - 1805)
The present plaque was inspired by the picture in the Louvre, Paris.
After the great success of his work 'Father Reading Bible To His Family' at the Salon of 1755, Jean-Baptiste Greuze went on to become a famed painter of genre scenes. Labelled by Diderot as 'morality in paint', these sentimental works later gave way to portraits of beautiful, often scantily clad, young maidens, much in the same taste as the present example.
