A MINTONS PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE BLUE AND IVORY VASE AND A LATER COVER
Circa 1900-1905, gilt crowned globe mark, incised shape no. 1013, gilt NP. 1257, signed A.(lboin) Birks
Of shield shape, the domed cover with bud finial, the waisted neck enriched with gilt scale and flanked by upright gilt ribbon-tied wreath handles, finely painted and hand-tooled in white slip with a scantily clad nymph being captured and shackled to the stars by two putti, within a celadon surround, set on a similarly edged pale-blue band enriched with pâte-sur-pâte Bérainesque arabesques, the reverse with a panel of a pendant amatory trophy, the tapering lower section of the vase enriched with gilt faux fluting, on a conforming ribbon-tied knopped socle, circular foot and square base

It is likely that the present vase did not take a cover. See Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, The Art of Ceramics Relief Decoration 1849-1992, Essex, 1992, p. 147 for a very similar uncovered example. It is also interesting to note that in June of 1871, Minton opened a separate account book for pâte-sur-pâte vases. Though incomplete, every entry in the log was numbered, the first denoted as NP 1 and the last entry for pâte-sur-pâte listed as NP 1434. The NP or New Pattern mark indicated new and trial wares. The present example is marked NP 1257.
