Lot Essay

Cornelis Troost is mainly known as a painter of portraits and theatrical scenes and is considered to be one of the foremost painters of his age. He started his career as a portrait painter in circa 1723 after having studied with Arnold Boonen, making the present picture one of the earliest known signed and dated paintings by the artist.
