Lot Essay

Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with applied gold hour markers in 1948 and its subsequent sale on 18 October 1949.

Manufacture of reference 1526, highly appreciated by collectors and immediately recognisable by its Calatrava-style case, was launched in 1941. According to literature, only 210 examples were made, the majority in yellow gold. Examples in pink gold and with the highly attractive pink dial, such as the present watch, are exceedingly rare. In over 30 years of international auctions, no more than seven ref. 1526 with this charismatic colour configuration have been offered publicly.

The present watch is overall very well preserved and must be considered as a very honest and original example. The case has been saved from excessive wear and consequently from overpolishing. The Calatrava case proportions show to a very high degree and the hallmarks are still crisp. The dial is in desirably well-aged condition, revealing a charismatic shine of rose-copper-salmon-finish, and the hard enamel signature is nicely raised.

Reference 1526 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, pp. 282 & 283.
