PRESENTATION COPY. Volume I is inscribed on the half title, "Inscribed by Winston S. Churchill for Rufus Clarke 1948." Volume III is inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Inscribed for Rufus Clarke by Winston S. Churchill 1950." Volume IV is inscribed on the half title, "Inscribed for Rufus Clarke by Winston S. Churchill 1952" and signed "Rufus" on the front free endpaper. Provenance: loosely-inserted photocopy of a typed letter, signed, from Churchill's daughter, The Lady Soames, regarding Rufus Clarke's close friendship with her husband: "I am quite sure you can rest assured that the signature in the books you now have is genuine."
