The first steamship named Lusitania was built for the Pacific Steam Navigation Co. in 1871 for their Liverpool to South America service. Chartered to the Orient Line in 1877 to inaugurate their new Plymouth to Melbourne route, she completed the maiden run in 40 days, 6 hours. Sold to the Beaver Line (Elder Dempster) for their Canadian service in March 1900, she was wrecked on Cape Race just over a year later, but without loss of life, on 26th June 1901.
