Lot Essay

Argonaut was, at 1,073 tons net, one of the larger clippers employed in the China tea trade and was built on the Thames in 1866. Consistently fast, she narrowly escaped being wrecked in 1873 due to a reckless gamble by her captain and was soon afterwards transferred onto the Australia run where she remained until condemned after springing a leak at sea in 1888.

For another portrait of this vessel, by Henry Scott, see our autumn catalogue of Important Maritime Art, 31st October , 2007, lot 101.
