Lot Essay

The representation of the Virgin breast-feeding the Child, the so-called Madonna Lactans, depicted in a tondo was a type of picture made popular by Hans Memling in Bruges in the late 15th century and was still en vogue in the same town in the first half of the 16th century. Memling's followers like Jan Provoost and Adriaen Isenbrandt varied on the theme by introducing the landscape as a setting, as evident in the present composition.
