Lot Essay

Houbraken referred to van Zijl in his Groote Schouburgh of 1718-21 as 'the little van Dijck'. Van Zijl actually lived opposite the Anthonie van Dyck in London (see J.H.J. Mellaert, 'The works of G.P. van Zijl', in The Burlington Magazine, September 1922, XLV, pp. 147-8.
