EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Two autograph postcards signed ('Albert') to his first wife, Mileva, n.p. [Berlin], n.d. [postmarked 10 December 1915] and 23 May 1918, together 2 pages, small 8vo (browned).
FAMILY DIFFICULTIES. In the first card, rather in spite of Mileva's discouraging letter, Einstein announces his decision to travel to Switzerland in the hope of giving his son Hans Albert some pleasure, 'Denn es besteht doch ein Schimmer von Möglichkeit, dass ich Albert durch mein Kommen eine Freude mache'; she is however to ensure that Hans Albert responds well to this, because Einstein's overworked state disinclines him to encounter stress and disappointment: 'Ich bin nämlich recht abgespannt und überarbeitet, und nicht fröhig, neue Aufregungen und Enttäuschungen durchzumachen'. In the second postcard he informs Mileva of a money transfer, and proposes a journey to Switzerland in the summer, 'zumal die Strapazen zu gross für mich wären bei den üblen Reiseverhältnissen [unless the exertions of the awful travelling conditions are too much for me]'; he also plans to spend 2 months on the Baltic coast, and asks for her response to the suggestion that one or both of their sons should accompany him, 'Wir würden dort sehr viel segeln'.
