Illuminated initial opening the main text in blue modelled in white on punched gold ground within red and green fictive frame, major initials in interlocking red and blue, smaller initials in red or blue, paragraph marks in red. (Occasional wormholes, heavier at end, small wormtrack in several quires, light marginal stain in final few leaves.) 19th-century half mottled sheep, red leather and paper spine labels (lightly rubbed); modern citron pigskin folding box. SECOND LATIN EDITION of the works of St. Bridget, Swedish mystic and founder of the religious order of Brigittines. After a life as wife, mother and lady-in-waiting to the queen of Sweden, Bridget devoted herself to religion and asceticism. The present work records her prophetic revelations given to her by Christ and the Virgin Mary on a range of papal, ecclesiastical, and secular issues. Through the offices of his secretary, Florian Waldauf, Emperor Maximilian requested that Koberger undertake two editions of the Revelationes, one in Latin and one in German, both to be illustrated. Koberger based his on the first Latin edition, printed at Lübeck in 1492. The woodcuts, and their arrangement into larger compositions, depend thematically on the Lübeck edition but are new designs.
