Modus legendi abbreviaturas, and other texts. [Strassburg: The R-Printer (Adolf Rusch), not after 1477]. Chancery 2°. Collation: [1-2210 238] (1-7 Johannes Auerbach tract and Tractatus praesumptionum, 8-11 Modus legendi, 12-18 Dominicus de Visentina tract and Tractatus notariatus, 19-21 Processus iudicii antequam, 22-23 tracts by Innocentius IV, Dinus de Mugello, Petrus Jacobus de Montepessulano, and Galvanus Salvianus de Bononia, 23/8 blank). 227 (of 228, without final blank) leaves. 38 lines, double column. 3- to 8-line initial spaces, partly rubricated. (First leaf reinforced at hinge, some browning and spotting, one blank corner replaced.) Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, rosette and fleur-de-lis tools in diapered panel, ?17th-century chased brass corner- and centerpieces, two fore-edge clasps (rubbed and a little scuffed, one clasp renewed, repair on spine); modern cream linen folding box. Provenance: near-contemporary annotations on endpapers, a few marginal annotations.

SECOND EDITION of this useful compilation of legal texts, headed by the Modus legendi abbreviaturas, and ONLY EDITION of the Forma procuratorii. Printed at the first press at Esslingen, the Forma by Johannes de Grassis, professor of law at Turin and Pavia, is rare. ISTC records six institutional copies only, and no copy appears to have been sold at auction in over 50 years. The Modus legendi abbreviaturas is a glossary of abbreviations commonly found in Roman and civil law. As a useful reference work, it enjoyed several incunable editions, either on its own or, as here, in conjunction with other texts. The Forma procuratorii is bound after quire 18, and the four quires containing the Modus legendi are bound after the seven quires of the Johannes Auerbach and Tractatus praesumptionum. Forma: H 7873; Walsh 939 & pl.XI; GW 11335. Modus: H *11480; BMC I, 64 (IB. 673); BSB-Ink. M-499; CIBN M-494; Goff M-752.
