First 3-line initial and a few others in blue with pink pen-work flourishing, initials and paragraph marks in red and blue, later pagination and running headings in manuscript. (Occasional light staining, a very few leaves with a small area of marginal worming, some of these with old repairs, manuscript headings and pagination shaved.) Early 19th-century quarter calf over paper boards, without free endpapers, flat spine tooled in gilt, red morocco label (light rubbing at extremities). Provenance: early annotations.
FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT MILANESE INCUNABLE -- only the second book printed in Milan by Valdarfer who had transferred there from Venice. De Chaimis was a Papal legate under Sixtus IV and a Franciscan monk at the convent of S. Maria de Angelis near Milan. This, his only work, was hugely popular and reprinted eleven times in the incunable period, predominantly in Germany. It consists of a tract on confession, information on various professions, doctors, shoemakers, merchants and others, and an early description of gambling: card and dice games forbidden to priests.
