2° (300 x 205mm). Woodcut portrait of Ptolemy, 2 half-page and 2 full page woodcuts, 53 double-page woodcut maps only (of 54), printer's device on final verso, with c6 blank, early annotations. (Lacking plate 31, occasional browning and spotting.) Contemporary limp vellum gilt, sides with oval within ruled panel with strapwork azure tool and fleurons at corners, edges gilt and gauffered, spine lettered in 17th-century manuscript (small loss at lower edge, ties missing, lightly rubbed).

Enlarged edition of the Geographia that includes all the Ptolemaic maps and the modern maps from the 1544 edition with the addition of five completely new maps, here in an elegant contemporary vellum gilt binding. First published in 1540, the Geographia is a landmark work which contains several of the most significant modern maps in the history of cartography: the first set of the four continents ever published, the earliest maps of the Western Hemisphere and Africa, and the first separately printed maps of England and Scandinavia.
