YEATS, William Butler (1865-1939). Eight Poems ... transcribed by Edward Pay. London: 'Form' at the Morland Press, January 1916.
4° (290 x 215mm). Frontispiece after Austin Spare and title in red. Text in black with titles to the poems and initials in red. (Without the typed slip.) Original wrappers printed in black with limitation and errata on inside covers (light waterstains and spots to wrappers, spine rubbed, stitching perished). Modern morocco-backed box.
LIMITED TO 200 COPIES. This no. 54 of 122 copies on Italian hand-made paper, priced at 3/-. It is without the typed slip, found at the bottom of the title-page in some copies, stating: "This edition is an exact facsimile of certain pages in the quarterly periodical, FORM. The responsibility for the calligraphy and design rests entirely with the proprietors of FORM'. The poems later appeared in Poetry (Chicago), February 1916; then in Form, April 1916, and the collection was prior published in order to maintain copyright. Although Yeats disliked Austin Spare's nude ('The red woman is a brute'), he was persuaded by Charles Ricketts to let publication go ahead, the slip being added to disassociate him from the style of production. The copies on Japanese vellum, published at 2/6, were without the nude. Wade 114.
