Provenance

The Meysey-Wigley Family, Shakenhurst, Worcestershire
The Meysey Family were granted Shakenhurst by King Edward III in the mid 14th Century and the estate still remains in the ownership of the same family. The present house was enlarged and modernised in the late 18th Century and retains part of the 17th Century furnishings from the earlier house, most notably the present magnificent table with its formidable and rare single plank slab top.

Large single-plank-top tables are comparatively rare. A six-leg table with a single plank top was sold at The Manor House, Ashby St Ledgers, Northamptonshire, Christie's House sale, 28th and 29th November 1988. More recently, good six-leg tables, but not with single-plank tops, have sold at Christie's South Kensington, 8th July 1998, Lot 595, Sotheby's London, 7th April 1998, Lot 258 and Christie's London,'The Parry Collection', 24th Aptil 1997, Lot 217.
