Lot Essay

In 1908 August Gaul created the Schwanenkückenbrunnen, a stone fountain with bronze figures of swanchickens, for the private park of his Maecenas Max Cassirer in the Berlin Kaiserallee (nowadays the Bundes allee). When Cassirer was forced to sell his house in 1938 he left the fountain but took the bronzes with him, which have since disappeared. In 1961 Cassirer's family donated the fountain to the Charlottenburg district, where it can still be seen with new bronze casts of the swanchicks.
