Lot Essay

This table closely follows Thomas Sheraton's design for 'A Universal Table' (see illustration). In The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793, the purpose of the table is explained thus: The use of this piece is both to answer the purpose of a breakfast and a dining-table. He notes the divisions within the drawer for different sorts of tea and sugar, and sometimes for notes, or the like.
