Lot Essay

For similar examples see Joe Earle, Flower Bronzes of Japan, (London, 1995), pl.38, 39, 40. He discusses the dohyoshi shape and states that the design is the rendition of an iris plant in flower, the stream in which it grows being represented by a swirl of bronze.
