WITH SIGNATURE MUSASHI KUNI EDO (NO) JU KURIHARA ECHIZEN (NO) KAMI KENSHI NOBUHIDE; ON THE URA TAKE MIKAZUCHI NO MIKOTO and YAMATO TAKERU NO MIKOTO, MEIJI PERIOD, (LATE 19TH CENTURY)
Sugata [configuration]: honzukuri, o-kissaki iori- mune
Kitae [forging pattern]: hada o-itame nagare with jinie and a vivid chikei
Hamon [tempering pattern]: vividly reciprocating gonome with choji
Boshi [tip]: midare-komi with deep gunome
Horimono [carvings]: on the omote a sculpture of a martial deity in armour wielding a ken type sword with waves and bamboo sculpted in a broad groove; on the ura a banner with clouds, a ken, and a gilt sun
Nakago [tang]: file marks indistinct, one mekugi-ana, tip kurijiri
Habaki [collar]: single copper gilt
Nagasa [length]: 70.3 cm.
In shirasaya [plain wood scabbard]: inscribed on the ura with the inscription of the signature 'Musahi Kuni Edo Ju Kurihara Echizen (No) Kami Kenshi Nobukuni' and 'Kore Nagasa Ni Shaku San Sun Aru' [the length is 2 shaku 3 sun] followed by 'Kaei Yori Meiji Ni Itaru Takumi' [a craftsman working through the Kaei and Meiji eras]. On the omote 'Meiji Konjo Tenno No Goken Wo Tsukurishi Eiyo No Sakujin Nari' [An honoured craftsman who made a sword (or swords) for the present Emperor Meiji] and 'Yamato Takeru (No) Mikoto Toi Go Shinsei No Zu Kiwamete Biji Kono Sakujin Chokoku No Myoshu' [The depiction of Yamato Takeru quelling the Eastern Eizo is extremely beautiful.
