Lot Essay

Tanabe Chikuunsai I (1877-1937) was the first master of basketry of the Tanabe family, who are revered for attaining the longest continuous lineage of bamboo artists in Japan. Chikuunsai I's works were influenced greatly by those of the Chinese literati tradition, but combined this with a unique Japanese sensibility.
