The first signed Sadanobu, the second signed Minkoku, Edo Period (18th - 19th century)
Of a dragon coiled inside a pumpkin, eye inlaid in pale cowhorn, and another of a spider on a lotus leaf
3.3cm. and 5cm. wide

Lot Essay

The first, with the dragon partly concealed and seen breaking out of a fruit is synonymous with the horse emerging from a gourd; an allusion perhaps to the proverb Hyotan Kara Koma [the unexpected always happens]
