A shikishiban surimono design from a series of six titled Niwatori awase [Matching of Chickens] commissioned by the poet Shakuyaku in 1825 for his poetry club, this one carries the title Ichiban hidari Shojo [first on the left - Shojo] and depicts a pile of sake barrels and a very large sake cup popularly supposed to have been used by Shojos who were partial to drinking sake in large quantities, signed Shinsai, good impression, with silver-coloured powder added, some fading of colours, good condition; a still life shikishiban surimono study of items connected with a visit to the theatre, including a mat, a lunch-box, a chopstick case, programme and a bowl of mandarin oranges, commissioned by the Gogawa Poetry Club to celebrate the appearance of a new member of the Ichimura Tachibanaya [House of Mandarins] acting family, signed Oju [by request] Hokkei hitsu, good impression, some fading of colours, slight foxing, and three others including some Meiji editions
