4° (248 x 200mm). Engraved headpiece. (Lacking the engraved portrait, light marginal spotting, occasional light soiling.) Contemporary mottled calf, flat spine tooled in blind, green morocco spine-label, marbled endpapers (scuffed, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Nizhnetagil'skaia Library (blind stamps) -- Anatole de Demidoff (San Donato Library stamps) -- Paul Pavlovich Demidov (crowned cipher; by descent to:) -- HRH Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia.
FIRST EDITION. THE DEMIDOV COPY, in its first binding with the stamps of the libraries at Nizhnii Tagil, and San Donato, and with Paul Demidov's stamped crowned cipher. Nikita Akinfievich was the first of the Demidovs to actively patronise the arts and sciences, and corresponded with Voltaire and Diderot. Nikita and his brother had founded the town of Nizhnii Tagil a few years earlier as the centre of their planned empire of ore and mineral processing.
