4 ° (260 x 200mm). Engraved allegorical vignette by C.M. Rothe after J.d. 'Sthln'. (Occasional minor marginal soiling.) Contemporary polished calf, spine lettered in blind (spine-ends each with a tear, that to the head partly repaired, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Eugene Mollo (oval engraved bookplate) -- Count Sergii Stroganov (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. THE MOLLO -- STROGANOV COPY of the first volume of Peter's diary, which is sometimes called his History of the Swedish War -- the key factor in Peter's sweeping, modernizing reforms. Peter compiled the work with the assistance of A.V. Makarov, P.P. Shapirov, and others, but revised the manuscript so often that it remained unpublished at the time of his death. It was published on the order of Catherine II, who commissioned Shcherbatov to edit the work. The second volume was published separately two years later in 1772. SK 2282 (illustrated); Sopikov 4096.
