8° (254 x 170mm). Photogravure portrait frontispiece. Original full blue velvet by Gagen, front cover lettered in gilt, edges gilt, white moiré silk doublures (spine rubbed). Provenance: ?Alexander III (binding, and pencilled shelf-mark of the ?Winter Palace Library) -- 'printed in Russia' (small ink-stamp) -- Paul M. Fekula.

FIRST EDITION, MOST PROBABLY FROM ONE OF THE IMPERIAL COLLECTIONS, possibly that of Alexander III at the Winter Palace Library, as the luxurious binding and pencilled shelf-mark suggest. This memorial edition was published on the 40th day after the death of the renowned author and Slavophile, whom D.S. Mirsky called one of Russia's finest journalists with Aleksander Hertzen.
