8° (260 x 170mm). 7 full-page lithographs, some with tissue-guards. Two folding maps. (Light browning, some marginal spotting, a few short marginal tears, some tears to margins and folds of maps.) Contemporary blue half-cloth by M.D. Lomkovskii (extremities rubbed). Provenance: A. Sarandinaki (bookplate) -- traces of previous bookplates.

FIRST EDITION. The Sarandinaki copy. A history of the Battalion, formed in 1837, named after 'Uncle Mikhi': the youngest son of Nicholas I. Mikhail Nikolaevich was Governor-General of the Caucasus for twenty years and head of the Caucasian army. Chechnia, Dagestan and the Western Caucasus became part of the Russian Empire under his leadership. Grand Duke Mikhail also oversaw the Caucasian theatre of war during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78, in which this battalion played a role in several battles and campaigns.
