4° (308 x 232mm). Text printed within blue border, original photograph laid into front pastedown endpaper, title vignette printed in gilt. (Very light stain to upper edges, small tears to some fore-edges, some smudging to first and last pages.) Handpainted covers on pebble grain cloth, blue moiré endpapers (text block nearly detached, painting slightly smudged, top right corner of front cover chipped, extremities and endpapers slightly rubbed). PRESENTATION COPY WITH A PHOTOGRAPH AND HAND-PAINTED COVERS, MADE FOR MEMBERS OF THE IMPERIAL FAMILY to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Prince's 1866 Voyage to the Urals. In his introduction, Bogdanovich claims that proper exploitation of the Urals' vast mineral wealth, and competition with Western powers, can be achieved only on the initiative of the government. The following decade saw a boom in Russian railway construction linking European Russia to the Urals and beyond, not the least important example of which was the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad (see lot 156). Such construction greatly facilitated the transportation and export of many of Russia's natural resources. Fekula 3073 (this copy).
