2° (530 x 340mm). Half-title, engraved title and 100 lithographed plates on India paper mounted, with tissue guards, 3 hand-coloured large folding maps. (Scattered spotting and browning throughout, mostly in the mounts but sometimes heavy, damp-stain in the bottom margin of some leaves, short tear in the inside margin of the engraved title, one map with repaired tears, another with short tears.) Contemporary quarter morocco over marbled boards, flat spine gilt in compartments (extremities rubbed, sides scuffed). Provenance: C.F.L. (crowned initials on spine-foot).
FIRST EDITION of some of the finest 19th-century illustrations relating to Russia, this copy EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with three large hand-coloured folding maps: a general map of Demidoff's itinerary, one of the Crimea, and a geological map of the Donets River basin -- all published by Ernest Bourdin. The descriptive text, as always, is for plates 1-87 only -- the remaining plates being self-explanatory portraits of members of the expedition. Brunet II, 583; cf.
