ECONOMICS -- Stoletie Udelov 1797-1897. [A Hundred Years of the Apanages]. St. Petersburg: Tip. Glavnago Upravleniia Udelov, 1897.
8° (277 x 190mm). 22 photogravure portraits, 4 coloured double-page tables. (Limitation leaf loose.) Original full green morocco, unsigned but by A. Shnell, with gilt moiré doublures and gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt (extremities rubbed, spine evenly faded). Provenance: V.I. Veshniakov (printed statement of limitation) -- V.I. Klochkov (bookseller's ticket) -- Paul M. Fekula.
The Fekula copy. One of a very small number produced for presentation only. This one, in the original full morocco binding by Shnell, was presented to the economist V.I. Veshniakov (1830-1906), who was secretary to the Russian Geographical Society from 1881. Paul I's reform of the apanages, ultimately one of his most enduring legacies, ensured that the Imperial family's income was guaranteed and independent from the State budget; this also facilitated the enactment of his law on the order of succession, which remained in place until 1917. Burtsev 2133; Fekula 2963 (this copy).
