4° (363 x 275mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by Brokgauz of Leipzig, 10 full-page plates, and illustrations throughout by P. Gnedich, M. Dal'kevich, S. Solomko, B. Andreev, A. Afanas'ev, E. Samokish-Sudkovskaia, and others, and with ornaments and initials by N. Samokish. (The bottom corners of 3 or 4 gatherings creased with short tears.) Contemporary half-morocco, all edges gilt, cream moiré paper endpapers (covers detached, spine worn). Provenance: Paul M. Fekula.
A finely illustrated, large-format edition of Gogol's great work, the text edited by N.S. Tikhonravov, and in a contemporary binding with all edges gilt. Fekula 4721 (this copy).
