FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY MAIAKOVSKII: 'V. Barshevskomu dlia tovarishcheskogo otzyva [For V. Barshevskii in friendly reply]'. Meierkhold directed the production of Maiakovskii's play which opened in St. Petersburg in November 1918, with Futurist set designs by Kazimir Malevich. Mystery Bouffe, sometimes called 'the first Soviet play', was written to mark the first anniversary of the new, Communist government. MoMA, The Russian Avant-Garde Book, p.201.
