MALEVICH, Kazimir Severinovich (1878-1935) and Vladimir MAIAKOVSKII (1893-1930). 7 Propaganda Postcards. Moscow: by S. Mukharskii for Segodniashnii Lubok, n.d. [but c.1915].

7 chromolithographed postcards (140 x 90mm and vice versa). (Light soiling and light wear.) Matted, framed and glazed.

The Segodniashnii Lubok ('Contemporary Chromo') publishing house was established by G. Gorodetskii shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. Over a period of three months it produced a range of propaganda posters and postcards on patriotic themes after artists including Kazimir Malevich, Aritarkh Lentulov, Il'ia Mashkov, Vladimir Maiakovskii, David Burliuk and Vasilii Chekrygin. Harking back to the traditions of Russian folk woodcuts, these were generally printed in four colours with deliberately simplistic contour drawings; the verse captions are generally by Vladimir Maiakovskii. Cf. Petrova, Kazimir Malevich in The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, 2000, p. 378).
