Lot Essay

The chain of SS worn by the present sitter denotes the position of Chief Justice of the King's Bench, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, or Chief Baron of the Exchequer. This chain dates from the period of Henry VII who added the Tudor badges of the portcullis and the rose.
