Lot Essay

The window seats are designed in the George III Roman Antique fashion with its fluted frieze and antique columnar legs, they relate to a suite of seat-furniture supplied to Sir John Griffin Griffin (1719-1797) in 1771 under the direction of Robert 'Bob the Roman' Adam for the new ground-floor rooms at Audley End, Essex, by the Swallow Street cabinet-makers and upholsterers Gordon and Taitt (J. Cornforth, 'Audley End, Essex-I', Country Life, 27 December 1990, pp. 32-33).
