Lot Essay

This work will be included in the Max Liebermann catalogue raisonné of pastels, watercolours and gouaches currently being prepared by Dr Margreet Nouwen.
The rural and artistic village of Laren lies circa 20 miles (30km) southeast of Amsterdam in the Dutch province of Noor-Holland. Liebermann came here for the first time during his honeymoon trip in 1884 and returned on numerous occasions to paint and draw studies of the village, the surrounding landscape and especially the villagers in their daily routines. What Liebermann valued the most about Laren was that industrialisation had not yet changed the rural and tranquil village life.
