MARK OF JOHN BRIDGE, LONDON, 1824
Shaped oval and with foliage and dart heightened gadrooned border, engraved with the Royal arms and with another coat-of-arms, each marked on the back
two 21½ in. (54.5 cm.); two 18 3/8 in. (46.6 cm.); two 17 1/8 in. (43.6 cm.) and two 14¼ in. (36.5 cm.) long

The Royal arms are those of King George IV.
The second arms are those of Fremantle, for Thomas Francis, later 1st Baron Cottesloe, and Baron Fremantle of the Austrian Empire (1798-1890). He married, in 1824, Elizabeth (d.1857), daughter and co-heir of Richard Wynne of Falkingham, Lincolnshire. Fremantle started his career in politics as Conservative M.P. for Buckingham from 1827 to 1846 and during the course of his long career served many posts including government whip for Peel's minority government of 1834-5. He became, in 1844, secretary for war, and chief secretary for Ireland in January 1845, a role he fulfilled with competence and introduced, in January 1846, the Irish Public Works Bill which procured the expenditure of £50,000 for the construction of small piers and harbours, with the view of extending the fisheries of Ireland.
In 1846 Fremantle resigned his seat at Buckingham and was appointed deputy chairman of the board of customs. He was subsequently appointed chairman of this department, a post which he held until 1873. He worked with Gladstone both as chancellor and prime minister. In 1874 was elevated to the peerage, first choosing the title Lord Chiltern, but this was discarded in favour of Baron Cottesloe of Swanbourne. He died at Swanbourne on 3 December 1890, and was succeeded by his son Thomas Francis. (8)
