Both chairs bear 1951 labels stating that they came from Merton Place, Surrey, which was being enlarged by the architect Thomas Chawner (d. 1851) for Admiral Lord Nelson at the time of his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 (J. Russell, Nelson and The Hamiltons, 1972, pp. 437-8 and 446).
