These chairs are closely related to an example of circa 1750-'60 attributed to the Amsterdam chair-maker Jan Ermans (circaa 1702-'61), which is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (R. Baarsen et.al., Rococo, Zwolle, 2001, p. 266, no. 165). The latter represents a slightly earlier phase of Dutch full-blown rococo, whereas the present chairs already incorporate some neoclassical carved features such as the garlanded swags and twinned flowerheads.
