The rectangular inverted breakfront top above a stylised foliate frieze and an architectural front with seven floral-decorated drawers arranged around a cupboard, the angles with spirally-turned and faceted columns, the sides similarly decorated with stylised foliage and flowerheads, above two further drawers, the stands with spirally-turned supports joined by X-shaped stretchers and terminating in turned feet

Lot Essay

This type of foliate and floral scroll marquetry is characteristic of Spanish and Portuguese colonial furniture and beautifully illustrated by a 17th Century shell-incrusted cabinet or mueble enconchado, featuring closely related marquetry, offered as a wedding gift to the grand-daughter of one of the Viceroys of Peru, and sold Sotheby's, New York, 21 May 1992, lot 79.
