Lot Essay

Cromek first visited Italy in 1830 carrying a letter of introduction from Robert Henry Cheney (1801-1866) to his mother in Rome. The Cheneys were responsible for introducing Cromek to many important figures and patrons in Italy, where he lived until 1848. This view of the forum shows the Arch of Septimius Severus to the left and the Colosseum in the distance on the right.
A collection of watercolours by Robert Henry Cheney and family were sold Christie's, South Kensington, 12 October 2005.
